
The short answer: Adapt...
The revolution happening in the healthcare system is creating challenges as well as opportunities for current healthcare players and new participants. If existing players do not adapt, they may soon be paced out of the competitive environment due to their inability to change.
Due to changes in healthcare policies, patients are bearing additional expenses and are acting more responsible for their care - they are behaving more like consumers. Previously in the industry “customers” were not considered to be the patients, the physicians and payers were. After quality measures came into play, providers started handling their patients as partners due to compliance initiatives to increase patient engagement in conjuncture with improving the quality of care.
The reason behind this change in behavior is that patients are the entities whom providers/physicians partner with to achieve specific health related goals. Patients are now interested in transparency with their healthcare providers, for example how much and what services are being charged - a direct response to paying more out of pocket. Patients have higher (if not more) expectations for the value of treatment they are receiving for the money they are spending.
Patients as a collective now have influence in the healthcare industry due to these government mandated initiatives and are looking for convenience and prompt satisfaction. Providers are now attempting to comply with the classic business model of supply and demand.
Developing consumer-driven results
To survive in a consumer-driven world, healthcare providers will have to think about what they’re delivering as a service. Providers must think what approach they are taking and how they differentiate the services they are providing to their patients in terms of quality, cost, and experience quickly and efficiently without facing major impediments or roadblocks. Sometimes the answer may be a simple solution, other times it may be adopting a new EHR system to better address the needs of the patients and maintain compliance.
